With Rosa back, there was no chance Liz was going to skip out on any holiday traditions. Maria and Liz browsed the local pumpkin patch and brought enough medium and large-sized pumpkins for everyone to carve. Liz didn't let Rosa come with them, worried she'd be recognized. But she promised to get plenty of options.
Max's house was the best place for carving, and luckily he was happy to host everyone. Orange pumpkin guts seemed to be everywhere as Liz looked around. Michael was using a pocketknife to etch something into his pumpkin, although she couldn't see what it was. Isobel was teasing Max for his very straightforward jack o'lantern. Alex and Maria were sitting on the ground next to each other, seemingly very focused on carving.
And then there was Rosa, with her painting apron on. She was sitting on a stool, with her pumpkin also balanced on a stool in front of her. She had a knife in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, and Liz couldn't wait to see what her pumpkin would look like. Liz had no doubt it was going to be the best one, even though she was a tad bit biased.

This is so cute. I always love when we get to see different characters' ways of approaching the same activity. I'm sure whatever Michael is carving is going to be very intricate and somehow also naughty. Of course Max is doing a straight-forward Jack O'Lantern. Isobel is doubtlessly commenting on (teasing) everyone's choices instead of getting messy in with her own pumpkin.

Steve felt like he played dress up every time he put on the suit, so he wasn't inclined to go out of his way to get a costume for the Halloween party. He figured Tony would give him a pass, considering they'd only just gotten back from their last mission the day before.
When he was a kid, he remembered dressing up in something homemade for the Halloween parades at school. He might have gone trick or treating with Bucky in the neighborhood a few times, but he was sure he didn't make it very far before going back home. That was the extent of Halloween for him.
So when he arrived at the first ever Avengers Halloween party, he was taken aback. Everyone was in costume. And not just hats and shirts, but full-on face makeup and detailed garb. A few people immediately caught his eye. There was someone dressed as a really scary clown complete with fake blood, another person with thick werewolf hair around their face that looked completely real, and someone dressed as the headless horseman stood above the crowd carrying a pumpkin head around.
He didn't recognize anyone at first, and he had half a mind to turn around before anyone recognized him.
But then he saw Tony, dressed in thigh high black boots and a black corset top with black eyeliner around his eyes. He had a big top hat on and a sparkly striped black and white jacket with long tails, plus he was carrying a cane that was sparkling black and white to match his jacket. He looked whimsical and androgynous and not to mention hot as hell.
Tony met his gaze and grinned slowly. Then he winked. Steve immediately felt white-hot embarrassment creep up his spine and make his cheeks burn. He was embarrassed about not having a costume on, sure. But mostly he was miffed that Tony had just caught Steve ogling him. It wasn't the first time, and no doubt it wouldn't be the last. But this thing between them was so new, Steve didn't want to look like a love-struck idiot.
"Hey handsome. You came as yourself tonight?" Tony asked once he got close enough for Steve to hear.
"Sorry. Couldn't come up with anything last minute. What are you supposed to be?" Steve deflected.
"I'm the ringleader! This is my circus!" Tony moved his cane around, gesturing at the whole party.
Tony threaded his arm through Steve's. Without even thinking, Steve hooked his elbow and started walking with him.
"So what can I get you? There are like a million pumpkin beers on tap, you've got to try at least one."
They were surrounded by a sea of bright colors and whimsy. People were dancing and laughing and being whoever they wanted to be. They were inspiring Steve to be bold.
So he leaned down and whispered against the shell of Tony's ear, "Maybe you've got an extra costume upstairs I could try on before the beers?"
When Steve moved away, Tony was grinning wickedly.
"I do, actually. But no complaining about what I dress you in!"
And then Tony reached down and squeezed Steve's butt.
The shiver that went up Steve's spine certainly wasn't because of the Halloween decorations.

Pumpkin Patch; Sam/Bucky

When Bucky told Sam that he'd never been to a pumpkin patch before, Bucky had to watch as several emotions exploded across Sam's face all at once. He recognized surprise, and a bit of shock, but Sam's face ultimately looked pitying.
Bucky rolled his eyes. "They can't be that cool."
Sam grinned. "It's the whole experience, man. It's not just about pumpkins, although those are neat, too. Come out with us. I'm taking Cass and AJ."
That is how Bucky finds himself sitting on top of a hay bail, in a trailer, getting pulled by a tractor. It seems so silly, but also so American, that Bucky can't help but grin. He looks out at a vast field of dirt with rows and rows of bright orange pumpkins. He's not sure why the tractor ride is a thing, considering it's just showing them more pumpkins, but he's determined to enjoy himself.
Eventually the tractor stops, and Cass and AJ scramble out.
"C'mon Bucky, this is where the rides are!" AJ shouts.
There is, in fact, a small carnival set up with a ferris wheel decorated with pumpkins, a tilt-a-whirl with bat wings on the clamshells, and bumper cars painted orange and black.
"What are we doing first?" Sam asks as he looks between his nephews.
"Bumper cars!" They shout enthusiastically.
"Hell yeah," Bucky says, excited. He can definitely get on board with that, so long as Sam is playing too.
Sam wiggles his eyebrows. "Oh, it's on."
Bucky has to squish down and pull up his knees to fit into one of the cars, but he still ends up having a blast ramming into Sam repeatedly. Then he lets Cass and AJ team up against him, and laughs maniacally as he drives away as fast as his little car can go.
Afterwards, Cass and AJ get on the ferris wheel while Sam and Bucky wait on the ground. The cool autumn wind wafts the earthy scent of pumpkin over them. Bucky is really starting to understand the appeal of a place like this.
Sam bumps Bucky in the shoulder. "Thanks for coming, man. You want an apple cider?"
"Sure." Bucky bumps him back. "Does this count as a date?"
Sam's grin is blinding at that point. It could probably outshine the sun. Bucky almost doesn't hear him answer, he's so distracted. He wants to make him smile like that forever.
"Nah. A real date requires food."
Bucky raises an eyebrow as he glances over at the food booth near them, advertising pumpkin pie, apple cider donuts, and pumpkin cookies.
"Wait here," Bucky says before he dashes off to get in line, leaving Sam laughing in his wake.

Clearly things had been getting a bit heated in the Avengers conference room. Even though Sam hadn't actually been in the room, he could tell because Bucky had started sending texts in all caps in rapid succession.
Bucky: IT'S GOING GREAT IN HERE
Bucky: MY GOD CAN WALKER SHUT UP
Bucky: PLEASE CALL WITH A FAKE EMERGENCY
The new Avengers are a complex and stubborn group of individuals, that much is for sure. Sam's happy to be on the outside of this particular squabble.
But he was supposed to come see Bucky that night anyway. So texts back.
Sam: Just come outside. Let's take a walk.
"Just a suggestion," Sam starts as soon as he sees Bucky push open the glass doors. "Maybe texting during the meeting wasn't helping."
Bucky sticks his tongue out at him.
"Don't you start with me too," Bucky huffs. He sounds on-edge, and there are dark circles under his eyes.
Sam quickly changes tact. "You're right, I'm just here for stress relief tonight. C'mon."
Sam takes Bucky's hand and pulls him away from the tower. They walk fast through somewhat empty streets. The streetlights are fairly bright, but Sam can still see the moon high above them.
He squeezes Bucky's hand and then lets go. Bucky follows him with pursed lips, still looking grumpy as hell, but eventually they make it to Sam's real destination.
Central Park does not have as many streetlights. The moon shines down on them, bathing Bucky in a blueish glow.
"The moon looks beautiful night," Sam says.
"Is there where I say some cheesy line about how you're beautiful too?" Bucky quips. But he's smiling now, which is a plus.
Sam shrugs his shoulders. "Only if you want to."
"You already know," Bucky teases. "Besides, we don't need that ego of yours getting any bigger."
Sam bumps Bucky's shoulder with his.
"There's my guy," Sam says, triumphant.
Bucky sighs. "Sorry. It was a rough one in there."
"That's okay." Sam means it, too. He's had his fair share of days like that.
Bucky takes Sam's hand and they walk side by side for awhile, enjoying the moonlight.

By the time Bucky wakes up at a leisurely 7:30 AM, he can already smell hearty okra and spicy filé wafting up the stairs. Bucky didn't know much about Cajun food before he got to know Sam, but now he can't really remember what life was like before crawfish boils and boudin balls. It seems that the Wilsons are always quick to show him some southern hospitality when he's around.
Bucky could not be more grateful for all the delicious home-cooked food he knows he's going to get to enjoy later that day. Sam had told him the night before that he'd be up early, peeling and de-veining shrimp. They had a big pot of shrimp gumbo to get to heating before AJ and Cass' friends came over for trick or treating. But when he reaches over to Sam's side of the bed, he's still disappointed to find it empty.
Bucky throws back the covers and sits up. He should make himself useful and help before he overstays his welcome.
Thanksgiving has never seemed like a particularly important holiday in the past. Even when he was a kid, he remembers going over to Steve's after dinner and bringing him leftovers, but not much else.
This year is different. It's the first holiday Sam's invited him down for. As in, he's folding Bucky into his family traditions in a way that's even more significant than summer cookouts and boat trips. Bucky really doesn't want Sam to be disappointed that he did. Even though Bucky's not a great cook, he could probably help get the house ready and then play football or something with AJ and Cass.
He's barely got his boxers on when the bedroom door creaks open. It's Sam in loose basketball shorts and a tight black tee, grinning from ear to ear.
"Hey lazy bones," Sam teases.
"Don't you have cooking to do?" Bucky teases right back.
"Nah. Pot's on. I was kinda hoping you'd still be in bed."
Bucky leans his forearms back against the bed and raises an eyebrow. "Yeah? Why's that?"
"No reason in particular," Sam says as he walks towards the bed. He ends up standing between Bucky's spread thighs, his hands firm on Bucky's hips.
There's a calm quiet all around them, and the morning sun is bathing Sam in golden light. Bucky feasts his eyes on Sam's broad chest and delighted smile.
"I'm glad you're here," Sam murmurs as he leans in, easy as breathing.
Bucky sits all the way up so he can kiss him. His hand finds its way to Sam's cheek, and Sam groans into his mouth.
"Thanks for having me," Bucky whispers back.

Remmick has been waiting for someone like Sammie to come long. Even though he isn't quite famous yet, word gets around to Remmick as he's aimlessly wandering through the south. Apparently the way Sammie wails the blues is supernatural.
Luckily Remmick has been around long enough to know that it doesn't matter how he kills Sammie, because his skills will transcend death. Even if he sinks his sharp fangs into Sammie's neck and rips his throat out, he'll heal. He'll be able to sing again. He'll be able to call Remmick's family back to him.
That means that all Remmick has to do is kill him. As soon as Remmick hears about the way he plays, he is consumed by desire. He's never wanted to feast so badly in his life. It gives him single-minded purpose, a purpose he has lacked for many hundreds of years.
Now he's closer than he's ever been. He's got Sammie in his sights. He abandoned his father's church for a juke joint, which will only make it easier for Remmick to get an invite inside. He's just got to find a few gullible southerners to be bandmates.
And evade the vampire hunters, of course.

Gansey put The Pig into park before it had even come to a complete stop. Blue threw open the door and ran out into the rain, her heart pounding in her chest.
He had to be there. They'd searched everywhere else. They were out of leads and out of time.
Blue squeezed her eyes shut for a brief moment without slowing down, hoping they were right. Terrified of what would happen if they weren't.
She heard feet running behind her. By then Adam and Ronan had surely been able to climb out of the backseat. She didn't wait for them, though.
She jumped the small chicken wire fence that was already leaning at a dangerously low angle. The rain seemed to pick up, the drops pelting her face and making her cheeks sting.
Then she pulled open the old side door of the dilapidated farmhouse and stepped inside, chest heaving from exertion.
It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the dim, cavernous space.
"He's here." It was Noah, somewhere inside the barn. He sounded relieved. So Blue was relieved, too.
She could make out a shape in front of her, a person kneeling on the ground, so she started walking.
Then, finally, she could see him.
It was Henry, with his arms tied behind his back and blood on his lip.
"Oh," she breathed. Then she fell to her knees in front of him, her hands cupping his cheek.
He blinked up at her.
"Are you real?" He asked.
"Yes," She answered. "Are you hurt?"
Henry squinted at her, considering his answer.
"Not in any permanent way," he said softly.
It broke Blue's heart a little.
She threw her arms around him as she heard a commotion coming through the doorway. She didn't turn to look.
Soon she was enveloped in someone else's arms. Adam's, she could tell by the smell of motor oil. Then Ronan, his stubble rough against her cheek. Noah's hand was cold against her arm. Finally Gansey put his arms around as much of her and Henry as he could. She smelled the minty-ness of his aftershave.
"Ow," Henry wheezed.
Blue didn't want to let him go, but she had to do.
As the group reluctantly untangled, Gansey murmured, "It's okay, we've got you now."

they looked for him! and they found him! and when Henry asked if Blue was real my heart broke. I may have cried a little because of course Henry would say "not in any permanent way" THAT'S MY BOY WHO HAD BEEN KIDNAPPED MULTIPLE TIMES!!!
god I need to lie down for 2-3 business days to process this.
