Jaunting out for cultural reasons

Some years ago I advised a composer who was composing an opera about A Historical Figure about whom I am something of a Nexpert, and I am now on their mailing list and get info on their current activities and broadcasts and so on -

And I was invited to the Private View of this, taking place at a venue which is only a reasonable bus-ride and short walk away.

Also giving me the chance to see a small part of the nearish locality with which I am relatively unfamiliar, and which has its charms.

I am not sure I was entirely enthused by the artworks - there was one installation of ceramics where I wished I had someone there to whom I could murmur that they had an urgent phallic look -

My main problem with the venue, however, was the acoustics - I think it was the kind of space where once you got a certain mass of people conversing it would always have been a bit trying for me and my hearing aids, but combined with the ambient music coming out of the various speakers, not optimal at all. (Though maybe its own soundscape....)

I don't think there was anyone there I knew besides The Composer - mostly of a younger generation and art/music people rather than groves of academe - and I didn't really get into much chat, but I did get 2 admiring comments on the green hair streaks and 1 compliment to my pendant (which I think I got at Wiscon, unless it was 4th St?).

However, I have had a sweet email from The Composer thanking me for coming.

bast (BAST) - n., fiber from the inner bark of various plants used for cordage or matting.

Said plants include flax, hemp, jute, lime/linden, ramie, nettle, mulberry, and several others. Also sometimes used as a name for the inner bark aka phloem itself. The name goes back to Old English bæst, the inner bark of trees used to make ropes, of Germanic origin, after which the trail gets murky.

And that, actually, was the last word from Busman's Honeymoon, which I didn't have time to post before external obligations (followed by illness) took over. I should be back to regular posting now, though.

I keep the nails on my left hand very short (except the thumb) because string player. But I just keep the ones on my right hand filed to not be ragged or too pointy, and there is usually 2-3mm of white on most of the nails most of the time. Last week, over the course of about 48 hours, every nail on my right hand snapped off. The thumb has splintered into the quick, but so far is holding together. And now my left thumb nail has just cracked.

Working hypothesis: radiation therapy? Timing might work? Otherwise, I can't think of anything else likely to have weakened all the nails simultaneously.

Zeppelin (1983)

Something you realize when researching games made by trans people is that in the early days of video games, there were a lot of trans women in the industry who hadn't transitioned yet. Much of the time, when I'm looking into a game from the 1970s or 1980s and see a woman's name listed in the credits online, that's not the name she was credited under when the game came out.

Such is the case with Cathryn Mataga, who created several games for Synapse Software under her former name in the early 1980s. She transitioned in the mid/late 1980s and moved into a more behind-the-scenes role, with extensive programming credits through the 1990s and 2000s, notably on the groundbreaking Neverwinter Nights (1991), the first graphical MMORPG.

But today I'm going to talk about Zeppelin (1983), a multidirectional shooter she developed at Synapse for Atari 8-bit systems.

zeppelin carrying a giant key flies through pixel caverns dodging enemy airships and shooting a hole in a vertical barrier

This game is not to be confused with Zeppelin (1982) from Microvations, nor with Zeppelin Rescue (1983) from Intercept Software, nor with Zeppelin! (1994) from Ikarion Software. Those are all unrelated games, which I guess either reflect the dominance of zeppelins in the cultural zeitgeist of the late 20th century, or else the fact that it's easier to get a game to look right when you're piloting a vehicle that's kind of slow and cumbersome to operate.

cut for length )

You can play Zeppelin in your browser on the Internet Archive. On the title screen you have to press F1 to start the game, and you use the numpad to control it. If you can. Playing with a joystick might be easier, but that's beyond my level of Atari emulation expertise.
rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
[personal profile] rionaleonhart
My thought process over the course of the fic I'm currently working on:

- I'll just write a simple PWP for smut practice.
- I've been sort of wanting to write Robert/female Chris Goes Wrong fanfiction, given that Chris is occasionally a woman in unofficial Play That Goes Wrong productions; let's go with that as the premise. Just get them into bed, and...
- ...
- But it'd be interesting to explore how Robert and Chris's relationship is different when Chris is a woman, isn't it?
- Actually, what's most interesting is all the ways their relationship isn't different, and it's hard to demonstrate that when male Chris isn't there.
- So if I summon male Chris from a parallel universe—
- In which case I suppose it makes sense to make this a sequel to my fic in which Robert summons himself from a parallel universe—
- But I need this to stand alone, because 'M/M/M Robert/Chris/Robert selfcest threesome' and 'M/F Robert/Chris AU' probably appeal to different people, so I'll need to incorporate enough setup for this to make sense if people aren't interested in the preceding fic—
- oh, God, I'm never going to get to the sex, am I

I can't just write smut! I don't know how! I thought the issue here would just be my inability to write sex, but apparently I also have to jump the hurdle of making the characters have sex in the first place. Somehow I find myself unable to write them in bed without first going 'but how did they get into the bed?', and the bed just keeps moving further and further away.

If you have any tales of your own silly struggles with writing, I'd love to hear them!

RPF: Aaron Taylor Johnson - Sorry, the inclusion of some RPF canons is negotiable, but I don't think it works for this exchange's goal of combining universes to treat a single character/person as a canon. Please pick something else.

In Memoria Adytum (SCP Foundation Canon) - I'm not quite sure what an SCP Foundation Canon is, or what's included in it. Could anyone who knows give me a little more information please?

X-Men - Chris Claremont First Run - A distinct run of comics seems like a canon that could work for these purposes, but are there specific dates or issue numbers involved? What does Claremont's first run cover please?

"The essentials of poetry are rhythm, dance, and the human voice."

"Mature art, I think, emerges when there's a certain balance of tensions, when there's neither neurotic prostration nor cold rationality, but an aura of energy and a drive to grasp personal "truths" still emerging into perception. To grasp and to shape them."

We might not have spent the sunset at Marblehead Light if we had known that all five yacht clubs within earshot would fire off a salute of cannons in accordance with the naval tradition of evening colors in season, but on either side of the sudden harbor-rolling cracks of smoke it was a postcard of a sunset in the smelted oranges and wave-mirrored blues of a painted present from, partitioned by the nineteenth-century cast-iron skeleton of the light itself. [personal profile] spatch had wanted to take me to water after I had spent the previous day in the kind of pain where as soon as it eased off a little I passed out. We ate roast beef sandwiches parked at the Mystic Lakes and drove north once rush hour had died down.

I've brought silver to set you free. )

Home again with a bowl of noodles, I heard [personal profile] rushthatspeaks' irresistible report on Tokuzō Tanaka's The Whale God (鯨神, 1962), a radiation of Melville I had known nothing about. Rob and I have not yet caught up on the latest episode of Widow's Bay (2026), but last week when we marathoned the previous three we were delighted to confirm that in its remix of New England horrors, Shirley Jackson had unambiguously entered the chat. Hestia, our own lighthouse, was golden-eyed in the cat tree.
